manufacturing process.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-785ade0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"785ade0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>That is exactly what an FMEA is not.<\/p><p>But what is it, then?<\/p><p>And where can the development team learn about the product\u2019s risks in the field?<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d4ef3d0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d4ef3d0\" question is by no means new.<\/p><p>My colleague Martin Werdich addressed this topic two years ago in an article in his magazine \u201cFMEA-Konkret\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a>.<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><a href=\"#_ftnref1\" name=\"_ftn1\">[1]<\/a> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Hazard<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">describes the potential of a situation, a substance, or a device\u00a0 (source of hazard) to cause harm to the affected person in terms of health, the performance of an activity, assets, etc.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0f93cad elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0f93cad\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Danger<\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">is a condition or situation in which there is a possibility of harm occurring.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-263fd53 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"263fd53\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Harm<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">is an involuntary disadvantage, a loss, or an impairment.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-dbc618b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">describes the combination of the <strong>probability of occurrence <\/strong>\u00a0together with the <strong>severity of the consequences<\/strong> of a potential harm.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4b4aa4e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4b4aa4e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Risk Mitigation<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">describes a targetted analysis of causes jointly with measures for prevention and\/or detection in order to fully avoid the harm or reduce its probability.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-46168f3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"46168f3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>If I can mitigate something then I should know what it is and how it can be measured.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-917c808 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"917c808\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>There are different definitions of \u201eRisk\u201c.<\/p><p>In our technical environment the definitions are applicable as listed above.<br \/>But in our technical environment we need to distinguish how consequences between technology and society are rated.<br \/>End oft he 1990s, Professor Ortwin Renn<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[3]<\/a> has created an analogy between types of risks and creatures in Greek mythology. He has places these types of risks in a diagram of the two factors probability of occurrence (vertical axis) and extent of hazard (horizontal axis). \u00a0<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><a href=\"#_ftnref1\" name=\"_ftn1\">[3]<\/a> Source: Scientific consultancy of the Federal Government \u2013 Global Environmental Changes (WBGU) <\/em><br \/><em>Annual Report 1998, chap. Risk Analysis<\/strong><\/h4>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-040d26b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"040d26b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The task to do a risk assessment of the product towards the customer is up to the hazard and risk analysis: <br \/>What can happen with this product, this service at the customer?<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4d5ab98 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4d5ab98\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Methods like HARA \u2013 Hazard and Risk Analysis or the determination of SIL categories<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"> [4]<\/a> \u00a0for the product tasks at the customer are designed for this purpose. They are able to find and level the consequences for the customer including the boundary conditions for the occurrence.<\/p><p>Measures typically focus on the application of methods rather than dedicated actions. <br \/>The hazard analysis derives the needed intensity of measures.<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><a href=\"#_ftnref1\" name=\"_ftn1\"><em>[4]<\/em><\/a><em> SIL = Safety \u2013 Integrity -Level. \u00a0This rating is related to Functional Safety. It looks how strong functions refer to danger for life and limb of the customer.
