industrial products\u2014that is, products with a larger customer base and repetitive manufacturing\u2014both the development of the product itself and the planning and preparation for production will require an organized process.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d4ef3d0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" why this blog post will focus on the design and use of a <strong>maturity model for the product development process<\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div levels?<\/strong><\/h4>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7a110b1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7a110b1\" process from idea to finished product in series production, important decisions must be made within the company. <br \/>Here is a list without claim to be complete:<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4d5ab98 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4d5ab98\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul><li>This product idea is to be developed into a product.<\/li><li>We submit a quote at a customer\u2019s request.<\/li><li>The product design is ready enough that prototype build for testing can begin.<\/li><li>The prototypes have passed functional tests. Equipment and tools for mass production must be ordered.<\/li><li>Production volumes must be planned, including parts supply and logistics.<\/li><li>Equipment and tools are available. The quality of the pre-series parts produced determines whether product and process development is complete and mass production can begin.<\/li><li>Delivery of the first products to customers.<\/li><li>Decision to ramp up production to the planned volume.<\/li><li>Expansion or modification of production capacities.<\/li><li>Modification and\/or further development of the product.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fb256cb elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"fb256cb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>These or similar decision points can be highlighted as milestones or decision points in a project.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-12ca9ed elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"12ca9ed\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Each milestone in the sequence represents progress in the product\u2019s maturity.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-15facb8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"15facb8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Such a maturity model should be in the interest of every company involved in development.<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d86070a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d86070a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In some industries, such as the automotive industry, such maturity models have been developed by OEMs<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a>. The OEMs apply these maturity models to their own development and require their suppliers to develop according to this or a recognized comparable model as well.<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><a href=\"#_ftnref1\" name=\"_ftn1\">[1]<\/a>OEM = Original Equipment Manufacturer. Such companies have the responsibility towards the final customer even if numerous components come from subsuppliers.<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-df8655a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"df8655a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>For German automotive manufacturers, there is an industry-specific description of maturity models available from the VDA QMC<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[2]<\/a>. Therefore, I also believe the term is incorrect. I consider terms such as \u201cmaturity assessment system\u201d or \u201cmilestone system\u201d to be more appropriate.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ac7873e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ac7873e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The process of developing products and processes is not influenced by the maturity model. This PDP<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[4]<\/a> will be tailored to the specific company or product, focusing on what the company deems necessary to achieve mass production. For a software company, this is significantly different from a firm that operates as a contract manufacturer.<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><a href=\"#_ftnref1\" name=\"_ftn1\">[4]<\/a> PDP = \u201eProduct Development Process\u201c\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f5f0eb8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f5f0eb8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>But in every company, all or some of the questions I listed at the beginning will need to be addressed to a greater or lesser extent.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-166da6f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"166da6f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Preparation is necessary for each of these decision points. This will usually require working backward from the target date and estimating how long all intermediate steps will take.<\/li><li>What exactly is the decision to be made at this milestone? Are there any comparable decisions that must be staggered throughout the project, i.e., made at different points in time?<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[5]<\/a> How is this handled?<br \/><em><a href=\"#_ftnref1\" name=\"_ftn1\">[5]<\/a> Ordering of equipment and tools may strongly differ from part to part depending on the lead time for design, delivery and set up.<\/em><\/li><li>What information must be available, and to what standard, in order to make the decision with the lowest possible risk of making a wrong decision?<\/li><li>What is the typical response if the milestone cannot be decided upon in a timely manner?<\/li><\/ol>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6de8680 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6de8680\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>There is no one-size-fits-all answer to these questions for an entire industry.
