Tasks are described for the structural elements (functions, requirements, characteristics). One or, in most cases, several possible cases of non-compliance (errors) are formulated for these tasks. According to the method at the lowest level, the cause level, measures for avoidance and detection are compiled.<\/p>\n<p>These different building blocks of FMEA require different linguistic formulations and schemata.<\/p>\n<p>My assertion: in a well-written FMEA, the wording of the description, possibly supplemented by comments, clearly indicates whether it is a system element, a function, an error, or one of the types of actions.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2296b80 e-flex e-con-boxed elementor-invisible e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"2296b80\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;animation&quot;:&quot;fadeIn&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8620615 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8620615\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Let&#8217;s briefly go through the node elements of FMEA and their typical formulation characteristics:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Title of the FMEA:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here, it should be clearly recognizable what type of FMEA it is and what the development object is. Under certain circumstances, it may also be useful to mention the development status, e.g., if a different FMEA is used for prototype construction than for pre-series and series production.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-639c96a e-flex e-con-boxed elementor-invisible e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"639c96a\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;animation&quot;:&quot;fadeIn&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8411aea elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8411aea\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>System elements: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>System elements are linguistically uncritical. They clearly designate the part of product development that is to be considered here or the step in the process.<\/p>\n<p>At the cause level, the system elements should serve as a sorting aid. In design FMEA, where work is carried out on the drawing until the product features are defined, I would consider \u201cgeometry\u201d, \u201csurface\u201d, \u201cmaterial\u201d, and \u201cprocess requirements from the design\u201d to be useful categories in the development of a mechanical component. In a manufacturing process, the four categories \u201cmachine\/plant\/tool\u201d, \u201chuman\u201d, \u201cmaterial\u201d, and \u201cenvironment\u201d are crucial. There are also colleagues who simply overwrite a system element at the lowest level with \u201ccauses\u201d and do not use any division into categories.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-873e947 e-flex e-con-boxed elementor-invisible e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"873e947\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;animation&quot;:&quot;fadeIn&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5e8eb6b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5e8eb6b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Tasks = Functions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The term used for tasks in the FMEA methodology is \u201cfunction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I find the term \u201cfunction\u201d somewhat difficult to understand, especially in its often ambiguous use. There are different approaches to describing tasks, as well as differences between FMEA types in the standards.<\/p>\n<p>This is naturally also reflected in the wording used to describe the tasks.<\/p>\n<p>A common guideline states:\u00a0 The function is formed by a noun and a verb.<\/p>\n<p>This is usually not wrong, but in my opinion it is not sufficient to correctly describe tasks in the FMEA.<\/p>\n<p>First, two questions arise:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Where and in what type of FMEA is a task description required?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>and<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>What understanding of function should be used in the formulation?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8248021 e-flex e-con-boxed elementor-invisible e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"8248021\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;animation&quot;:&quot;fadeIn&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8b57510 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8b57510\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>First, let&#8217;s address the first question.<\/p>\n<p>In my experience, it makes a big difference whether we describe what a product or process step should be able to do (function), whether we describe a supplementary requirement that must be taken into account as a boundary condition during development, or whether we talk about specific characteristics.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to what a product or process should be able to do, question 2 is central to the formulation.<\/p>\n<p>We can understand the function as a \u201cpath to the goal.\u201d This corresponds to the mathematical concept of a function. In mathematics, a function is the description of how an input variable is converted into an output variable.<\/p>\n<p>The output variable Y = function of X and the function is given by\u00a0 Y=\u00a0\u00a0 2.7 &#8211; 3X + 0.5 X<sup>2<\/sup><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5ef045d elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"5ef045d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"481\" src=\"https:\/\/unternehmensberatung-jarosch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Funktionsplot-zu-Sprache-in-der-FMEA1-1024x616.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-2601\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/unternehmensberatung-jarosch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Funktionsplot-zu-Sprache-in-der-FMEA1-1024x616.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/unternehmensberatung-jarosch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Funktionsplot-zu-Sprache-in-der-FMEA1-300x181.jpg 300w, https:\/\/unternehmensberatung-jarosch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Funktionsplot-zu-Sprache-in-der-FMEA1-768x462.jpg 768w, https:\/\/unternehmensberatung-jarosch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Funktionsplot-zu-Sprache-in-der-FMEA1.jpg 1256w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8756ba8 e-flex e-con-boxed elementor-invisible e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"8756ba8\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;animation&quot;:&quot;fadeIn&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-342a2d0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"342a2d0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>This functional term is followed by phrases that are primarily used in design FMEA to describe physical and technical tasks in the product:<\/p>\n<p><em>The <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">reduction gear<\/span> <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">converts<\/span> a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">high speed into a low speed and a low torque into a high torque<\/span>. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>In this sentence, the orange word takes on the designation of the system element, which is helpful for understanding the function more easily, but is not absolutely necessary due to the assignment of the function to the system element.<\/p>\n<p>The red words speed and torque are the actual objects of the function. And the verb \u201cconvert\u201d explains the physical process.<\/p>\n<p>This undoubtedly describes what this reduction gear is used for.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-52e2023 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"52e2023\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>However, this function does not describe which state would satisfy the customer. There are two possible ways to do this: The first option assigns additional information to the function. This information is referred to as \u201crequirements,\u201d \u201cspecifications,\u201d or \u201cparameters\u201d and specifies the development task. This also invokes additional boundary conditions that must be taken into account in the development.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-404756c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"404756c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><em>Examples:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The reduction gear must achieve an efficiency of &gt;90% during conversion.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The design must be suitable for maximum speed at the input and maximum torque at the output.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The reduction gear must be designed for operation with one maintenance per year over 20 years.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The gear must be able to operate in a temperature range from -40\u00b0C to +95\u00b0C, regardless of humidity.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The list of requirements can be expanded further.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2518ed9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2518ed9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Only with these specifications is it possible to highlight the difference to existing devices and clarify the actual development task.<\/p>\n<p><em>Perhaps the gearbox should perform exactly the same as its predecessor, but with 15% less weight \u2013 a challenge.<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d80ab6d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d80ab6d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The FMEA standards specify another important criterion for functions: functions must be <strong>rateabel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The reason is simple: in the next step of the FMEA analysis, failures = deviations from the required function are to be described. However, an failure can only be detected if an rateable property is not fulfilled or is insufficiently fulfilled. How can we derive failures if we do not precisely express what the target is, what the requirement is?<\/p>\n<p>If we look at the function of the reduction gear above, it is difficult to impossible to derive a deviation from this generic function \u2013 apart from \u201ccannot convert\u201d. But this fundamental negation of the function does not provide any insight for the risk analysis of this product.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7476b01 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7476b01\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>With the requirement of <strong>rateability<\/strong>, I come to the conclusion that a function should not describe the path to the goal, but rather the desired development result.<\/p>\n<p>I can then assess this state and systematically and logically derive deviations, failures from it.<\/p>\n<p><em>The <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">reduction gear<\/span> <span style=\"color: #00ff00;\">permanently<\/span> <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">converts<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">speed and torque<\/span> <span style=\"color: #00ff00;\">at a ratio of 1:3.5 up to an input speed of 3000 rpm and up to an output torque of 200 Nm<\/span>. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>This functional description is more concrete and rateable because essential specifications (not all of them here) have been included in the formulation.<\/p>\n<p>It is a question of style, not content, whether further conditions are mentioned as additional functions or as supplementary parameters or specifications.<\/p>\n<p><em>The <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">reduction gear<\/span> <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">converts<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">speed and torque<\/span> <span style=\"color: #00ff00;\">with an efficiency of &gt;90%<\/span>. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>The only important thing is that the \u201cfunctions\u201d package contains the development targets. What has proven to be important for the readability of the FMEA is the inclusion of task or location designations.<\/p>\n<p><em>If there are 25 similar but functionally different screw connections in the product or process, then groups should be formed and the function texts clearly distinguished according to their function.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b43828e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b43828e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Hence my tip #2:\u00a0 Formulate the function or requirement as a state to be achieved. This should also affect the tense used:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExecute function\u201d describes an activity. \u201cFunction is executed\u201d describes a state. Leave the activities to the actions and formulate something that can be evaluated.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-746c7a1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"746c7a1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Failure Modes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to FMEA theory, failures are deviations that can occur for a function. They do not have to occur, but it is neither impossible nor completely unlikely.<\/p>\n<p>The text of the failure, regardless of the FMEA level, therefore describes a deviation.<\/p>\n<p>Such deviations can be very similar. Therefore, in my opinion, it is imperative to find a unique error description for the detail currently being considered.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-27b000c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"27b000c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>There are companies and fellow moderators who like to refer to error catalogs.<\/p>\n<p>In my experience, however, this is an inadmissible generalization, similar to a function that is only entered generically without specification.<\/p>\n<p>If there is an accurate and appropriate text available as a template, there is of course no reason not to use it.\u00a0 But if you observe the same error five times, then it is either really the identical error and does not need to be written down five times, but only linked sensibly in the error network, or there are five different error cases, which must then also be distinguishable. Otherwise, you will not be able to make meaningful distinctions based on consequences and causes, which is again an inadmissible generalization.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c118da0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c118da0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>How should a failure mode be formulated?<\/p>\n<p>First, the text of the failure mode must clearly refer to the function.<\/p>\n<p>Then there are different failure cases in the Design FMEA. The AIAG-VDA-FMEA manual distinguishes between 7 basic types of design failures. Not all 7 need to be relevant. But more than one usually is. Therefore, an error in design can only mean that something has been <u>defined<\/u> as \u201cnot,\u201d \u201cinsufficient,\u201d \u201cnot functional,\u201d or \u201cnot manufacturable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the process, the task is to implement a specification in production and manufacture within the tolerance. Therefore, a product characteristic or process parameter \u201cout of tolerance\u201d is a meaningful failure description.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-296a5c7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"296a5c7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Actions<\/strong><\/p><p>In our FMEA, the linguistic design of actions still needs to be considered.<\/p><p>However, this topic deserves <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/unternehmensberatung-jarosch.com\/sprache-in-der-fmea-2-ausdruecke-fuer-massnahmen\/\">its own blog post<\/a><\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ea43be2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ea43be2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Conclusions:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Language and phrasing is essential for FMEA work.<\/li>\n<li>Always write your content in a way to fulfill the 2-3-4 rule:<br \/>Write it in a way to enable a second person to correctly explain it to a third person in four years.<\/li>\n<li>The formulation of functions &#8211; to my experience \u2013 is the most challenging part of the FMEA moderation. It is the job to bring physics or chemistry into a true text description for the dedicated product or process.<\/li>\n<li>Frequently used phrases like \u201cenable\u201d, \u201censure\u201d, \u201cfacilitate\u201d a.s.o. are not wrong but do not help. Make your saying active and make it rateable.<\/li>\n<li>Failure modes must clearly address all issues that could occur. If the team decides to exclude a failure mode then keep it in the FMEA and disable the entry for documentation.<\/li>\n<li>Failure modes need to discuss functionality of the product or process over lifetime. If there are numerous different failure modes over lifetime then they need to be addressed by individual formulations.<\/li>\n<li>This includes feasibility \/ manufacturability: A process must run safely as long as it is needed, including all issues of wear. But stay specific. What is the aspect that is the target?
